We celebrate genre films that bury their thesis under a trapdoor, auteur work that hides its real subject in plain sight, experimental shorts that change the meaning of their first frame in their last, screenplays that earn their surprise, edits that conceal the answer, and performances that conceal themselves.
Born from São Paulo — a city of layered chaos, polyglot streets, and a cinema scene whose recent wave has reshaped Latin American genre filmmaking — Plot Twist is an online film awards contest for filmmakers worldwide who treat narrative reversal as a craft, not a gimmick.

Plot Twist is structured for filmmakers who think of reversal as craft. One submission can place your project in main, technical, genre, documentary, animation, new media, and signature award consideration.
Evaluation
Festival personnel and jurors review entries for storytelling, craft, surprise, execution, and eligibility across all relevant awards.
Selection
Official Selection status is awarded only to projects that progress beyond initial evaluation rounds and are formally announced.
Virtual Cinema
Curated films may screen during festival week in an encrypted, password-protected virtual cinema, with opt-out available.
Awards
Winners and nominees receive Plot Twist recognition across main, technical, genre, and signature categories.
Once your project is submitted for any of our main award categories, it is automatically eligible for consideration in all relevant hosted categories. Plot Twist 2026 is presenting 31 focused categories for this edition.

1. Copyright Ownership
By submitting your work to Plot Twist, you affirm that all components of your project — including music, fonts, visuals, archival footage, and any other elements — are either your intellectual property or, if you are acting as a distributor, you have secured explicit permission from the copyright holder. Your work must be cleared for festival exhibition globally and in perpetuity.
2. Promotional Use
You grant Plot Twist the right to use stills, short clip fragments, posters, and other relevant materials from your film for promotional, editorial, and documentation purposes on the festival's official platforms, including its website, social media channels, newsletters, and partner outlets.
3. Film Access
You allow the festival director and authorized personnel to download your film for the purpose of streamlined offline evaluation, jury review, and curation procedures. Downloads are restricted to internal evaluation use only.
4. Virtual Screening Consent
By submitting, you agree to the encrypted and password-protected exhibition of your film during the designated festival week. All films screened on our virtual cinema are protected using Netflix-grade DRM technology, including Google Widevine DRM encryption and Apple FairPlay DRM protection, ensuring your work cannot be downloaded or pirated by viewers. You may opt out from virtual screening at any time and remain eligible for awards and nominations.
5. Professionalism
All participants — filmmakers, crew, jurors, and team — are expected to uphold a high standard of professional and respectful behavior throughout the festival week and in all related communications.
6. Feedback Mechanism
While Plot Twist values every submission, personalized feedback for each entry is not provided as standard. Feedback may be requested through designated submission tiers where opted for.
7. Non-Refundable Policy
Submission fees are final and non-refundable, regardless of the outcome or status of your film within the festival.
8. Award Consideration
A single submission fee ensures your film is evaluated across all relevant festival award categories — main categories, technical categories, genre categories, and signature Plot Twist categories — optimizing its potential recognition. There is no per-category submission fee.
9. Multiple Film Entries
Film production teams or individuals may submit more than one project within the same festival edition, with separate submission fees per project.
10. Resubmission Guidelines
Films submitted during a particular festival edition cannot be resubmitted to subsequent editions of Plot Twist.
11. Exhibition Limitations
Being nominated, awarded, or selected does not guarantee immediate or full screening on Plot Twist's virtual cinema platform. The festival reserves the right to curate its virtual cinema programming at its discretion.
12. Discount Waivers
Discounted entry fees are available for student filmmakers and filmmakers with disabilities. In exceptional cases, based on the festival's discretion, complete fee waivers may be granted. Requests must be submitted in writing prior to the relevant deadline.
13. Communication
Upon submission to Plot Twist, you agree to be added to our newsletter and mailing list for updates and information. You may opt out at any time via the unsubscribe link in any communication. By entering, you also opt in to receive promotional communications from partner film festivals and awards competitions; opt-out is available for these separately.
14. Selection Clarification
Submission to Plot Twist does not automatically grant the film “Official Selection” status. Official Selection is awarded only to films that progress beyond the initial evaluation rounds and are formally announced as such by the festival.
15. Accurate Credits
You confirm that the credits list provided with your submission is thorough, accurate, and reflects the complete creative team. Inaccurate or incomplete credits may delay or prevent accurate award listing and festival communications.
16. Eligibility Restrictions
Projects that promote extremist political or religious views will not be considered. Projects that defame individuals or organizations will be automatically disqualified.
17. Festival Discretion
Plot Twist reserves the right to disqualify any film based on the criteria outlined in these rules, ensuring the festival's integrity and reputation.
18. Language Policy
Films may be submitted in English or Portuguese without subtitles. For films in any other language, accompanying English subtitles are mandatory. Screenplays are accepted in all languages.

Plot Twist may collect personal information — including name, email address, country of residence, and film project details — during the submission process.
2. Use of Information
Your personal data will be used for communication regarding the competition and to send marketing communications from Plot Twist and our partner film festivals and awards competitions. Selected film clips or images may be posted on our digital platforms in accordance with the copyright permissions granted in the rules above.
3. Newsletter and Promotional Communications Opt-In
By submitting an entry to Plot Twist, you are automatically included in our mailing list for festival updates, results announcements, and promotional information.
4. Opting Out
At any time, recipients can opt out of electronic communications via the unsubscribe link included in every email, or by contacting the festival directly.
5. Data Protection
All personal information provided will be safeguarded in accordance with relevant data protection regulations, including the EU GDPR and Brazilian LGPD where applicable. We will not sell, distribute, or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so.

Sua obra deve estar liberada para exibição em festivais globalmente e em perpetuidade.
2. Uso Promocional
Você concede ao Plot Twist o direito de utilizar imagens, fragmentos de clipes curtos, pôsteres e outros materiais relevantes do seu filme para fins promocionais, editoriais e de documentação nas plataformas oficiais do festival, incluindo site, redes sociais, newsletters e veículos parceiros.
3. Acesso ao Filme
Você permite que o diretor do festival e a equipe autorizada façam download do seu filme com o objetivo de avaliação offline eficiente, análise pelo júri e procedimentos de curadoria. Os downloads são restritos ao uso interno de avaliação.
4. Consentimento de Exibição Virtual
Ao submeter, você concorda com a exibição criptografada e protegida por senha do seu filme durante a semana designada do festival. Todos os filmes exibidos em nosso cinema virtual são protegidos por tecnologia DRM de nível Netflix, incluindo criptografia Google Widevine DRM e proteção Apple FairPlay DRM, garantindo que sua obra não possa ser baixada ou pirateada pelos espectadores. Você pode optar por não ter seu filme exibido virtualmente a qualquer momento e ainda assim permanecer elegível a prêmios e nomeações.
5. Profissionalismo
Todos os participantes — cineastas, equipe técnica, jurados e equipe do festival — devem manter um alto padrão de comportamento profissional e respeitoso durante toda a semana do festival e em todas as comunicações relacionadas.
6. Mecanismo de Feedback
Embora o Plot Twist valorize cada submissão, o feedback personalizado para cada inscrição não é oferecido como padrão. O feedback pode ser solicitado por meio de categorias de submissão designadas no FilmFreeway.
7. Política de Não Reembolso
As taxas de submissão são finais e não reembolsáveis, independentemente do resultado ou status do seu filme dentro do festival.
8. Consideração para Prêmios
Uma única taxa de submissão garante que seu filme seja avaliado em todas as categorias de prêmios relevantes do festival — categorias principais, técnicas, de gênero e as categorias signature Plot Twist — otimizando seu potencial de reconhecimento. Não há taxa adicional por categoria.
9. Múltiplas Inscrições
Equipes de produção ou indivíduos podem submeter mais de um projeto na mesma edição do festival, com taxas de submissão separadas por projeto.
10. Diretrizes de Resubmissão
Filmes submetidos durante uma edição específica do festival não podem ser resubmetidos em edições subsequentes do Plot Twist.
11. Limitações de Exibição
Ser nomeado, premiado ou selecionado não garante exibição imediata ou completa na plataforma de cinema virtual do Plot Twist. O festival se reserva o direito de curar sua programação a critério próprio.
12. Descontos e Isenções
Taxas de inscrição com desconto estão disponíveis para cineastas estudantes e cineastas com deficiência. Em casos excepcionais, a critério do festival, isenções completas de taxa podem ser concedidas. As solicitações devem ser feitas por escrito antes do prazo relevante.
13. Comunicação
Ao submeter ao Plot Twist, você concorda em ser adicionado à nossa newsletter e lista de e-mails para atualizações e informações. Você pode optar por sair a qualquer momento pelo link de descadastro em qualquer comunicação. Ao participar, você também opta por receber comunicações promocionais de festivais e competições parceiras; o descadastro está disponível separadamente para essas comunicações.
14. Esclarecimento sobre Seleção
A submissão ao Plot Twist não concede automaticamente ao filme o status de “Seleção Oficial”. A Seleção Oficial é concedida apenas a filmes que progridem além das rondas iniciais de avaliação e são formalmente anunciados como tal pelo festival.
15. Créditos Precisos
Você confirma que a lista de créditos fornecida com sua submissão é completa, precisa e reflete a equipe criativa integral. Créditos imprecisos ou incompletos podem atrasar ou impedir a listagem correta de prêmios e as comunicações do festival.
16. Restrições de Elegibilidade
Projetos que promovem visões políticas ou religiosas extremistas não serão considerados. Projetos que difamem indivíduos ou organizações serão automaticamente desclassificados.
17. Discricionariedade do Festival
O Plot Twist se reserva o direito de desclassificar qualquer filme com base nos critérios descritos nestas regras, garantindo a integridade e a reputação do festival.
18. Política de Idiomas
Filmes podem ser submetidos em inglês ou português sem legendas. Para filmes em qualquer outro idioma, legendas em inglês são obrigatórias. Roteiros são aceitos em todos os idiomas.
